It has been a couple weeks since I’ve posted. In that time I’ve been to an ultimate tournament and then recovered from said tournament.
The big question is, now that I have the gel injections, how did my knee do? Short answer: about the same as it has been doing the past year and a half.
The gel injections did not stop the swelling that happens from running a lot. They did keep pain to a minimum, however, and that alone is worth it. Instead of swelling and pain, I just have swelling. Saturday night it expanded quite a bit, but I was still able to get loose and play on Sunday. The entire weekend I ran between 11 and 12 miles all told over five ultimate games.
The biggest problem was when I got back and could barely move the knee due to the swelling. I used ice, elevation and anti-inflammatories to treat it. Wednesday I even went back to yoga and was able to do most of the movements that did not involve bending my left leg.
Every day the swelling has gone down and today I could almost bend it as far as my right knee. About a ten-day recovery but I was able to do yoga and yard work and walk Finn within a day or two.
I’m hoping the next tournament will go a little better as my knee gets more used to the gel. I’m also starting back into my crazy workouts in addition to yoga and that should help stabilize the leg and knee. The biggest benefit of the gel is the mitigation of pain and that should help me to be able to workout and really focus on strengthening the left leg muscles around the knee. When they are stronger, the knee should work better and hopefully not swell up as much going forward.
