Still Kicking
I thought I’d do an update on my blog of four weeks ago where I talked about the neighborhood kickball team I was on. If you remember, we were in pretty sad shape, hadn’t scored a point and were getting just embarrassed out there.
But our very next game, something amazing happened: we scored! And we not only scored, we scored 6 points! Even had a teammate get a home run. We still lost 12-6, but it was a great moment to see that maybe we were getting the hang of it.
The next week, we jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never gave it up! We won that game 12-5 (or something like that). Our defense started to click a bit and we were able to get our offense going. Things were really looking up!
Last week, we again held our opponents to 5 points! They had this weird offensive strategy of popping up to me (in the shortstop position) at least twice an inning. And the final out of every inning was a popup to first. They did manage to scrape together 5 runs, but we had at least two innings where we got three outs right away. Seems like a recipe for another win!
Well, except they had this kickball savant as their pitcher. He could actually curve the ball in, and had an annoying amount of velocity on every pitch. We just couldn’t do anything against him. Our best offensive play was when I blasted a line drive right at his head for a hit. (Wish I could say I was aiming there, but I was trying to hit it into right field.)
Needless to say, we lost 5-0. But it was our best defensive effort of the season, so a positive there for sure.
This week we were supposed to start playoffs, but the aftereffects of Ian caused them to be postponed a week. Which is a bummer because I start rehearsal for a play next week.
I’ll be performing the part of “Jonathan” in the Winston Salem Theatre Alliance production of The Play That Goes Wrong. My role has a lot of comedic stunts to pull off, so I’m really looking forward to it. This is also the first time I’ve been on stage in 8 years. I hope to see you in the audience in November!
