Stairway to *#@!!

A photo of my CPT certificate. Oh, and Finn.

Astute readers will note that I did not post a blog last week. This is the first time I have missed a week since I started this over a year ago. Not too shabby, really. So, what the heck?

It was my birthday for one thing,  but mainly I was exhausted from a 2-week trip doing video at two difference conferences. With an ultimate tournament sandwiched in the middle. I just needed a break, really.

Today’s post will be a little rambly, too, and not about just one topic.

Quick note about the tournament and my knee: it held up great! None of the swelling or pain from the last tournament, so things are definitely improving. There is still some pain and a little bit of swelling, but I was able to function with no issues at my second conference.

I’ve been hitting yoga hard to get strength and flexibility back into my legs (and other joints). That has made a huge impact on how the knee feels, and given me more confidence in it.

This past Sunday I found myself in an awkward position. Literally. I was lying on the ground on my side pulling carpet staples out of the bottom step of a stairway. It took several minutes to get them all out, and half way along I realized I had been holding myself in a side plank the entire time, without even thinking about it. This position was easing pressure on my shoulders, which were doing all the work of pulling the staples out.

I’m unsure how else I would have done it, and also unsure if I could have completed it as quickly (right) as I did if I hadn’t been planking. The point is, all this crazy working out I do led to my body finding an efficient way to tackle this problem without me really consciously doing it. Once I realized what I was doing, I started thinking about efficiency of movement and body position and that helped me get through the rest of the suck that was pulling staples out of a bottom step.

I also found myself getting off the ground pretty quickly, despite my knee and a twisted ankle I acquired on Saturday. I think most of that was my just wanting to not be on the hard floor anymore, but still I was happy that I could bounce up as quickly as I did.

As we age, it become more and more important to have movement and exercise in our lives to help with everyday tasks. The more work we put in when we’re young, the better we’ll feel when we get older.
