Goals

It’s that time of year when we look back at what we’ve accomplished and start making plans for the future. I find it fascinating that it happens this time of year and not other times (as much). Obviously the new calendar year plays a part, but I also think the long nights and thoughts of warm weather make us ready to plan ahead to take full advantage when summer is upon us.

And a big part of that is new resolutions to get in shape and join a gym and finally get that body you’ve always dreamed about! Which usually last about three weeks and then most of us lapse back into the easy, familiar patterns of our lives and justify not getting in shape.

Right now we are also in the middle of a pandemic. We’ve gained weight, lost muscle, stopped going to the gym. Worse, some people stopped going to the doctor and that has compounded the fitness issues that a more sedentary lifestyle can lead to. More than ever, this is a good time to take a step toward a healthier life.

Each person has a unique reason to start going to a gym or hire a personal trainer, and until you find your reason it will be harder to stick with it. Simply going because it is January may not be good enough motivation. So, what is?

For some people it is truly a desire to shape (or re-shape) their body; for others it may be they want to be able to play with their grandchildren; others may be tired of feeling winded walking to get the mail; and others may have serious medical conditions that would improve with some form of exercise.

The key is to find your motivation. And then realize that you are going to have to invest in it. It will take time, sweat and yes, money. Joining a gym can be relatively inexpensive, but that alone may not be enough. More expensive gyms offering group classes may motivate you more but the program may or may not fit your goals. A personal trainer can really help you focus your energy into a program that will help you achieve those goals.

The same workout does not always fit each person’s goals. If you just want to feel less winded walking, you won’t need to do the same exercises that someone looking to qualify for the Boston Marathon would need to do. A personal trainer can help you find what works and guide you along so you meet your goals.

In her business as a PT, Lorraine sees the positive effects of fitness almost every day. The people who choose to invest in their health through personal training are less likely to need a doctor, are more able to do the things they love to do and lead more active lives than those who don’t. It is an investment in your future and one that will pay dividends down the line.

And, honestly, if the trainer is good you won’t need them forever.  Think of them as a bridge. At some point you’ll be able to take what they have taught you and motivate yourself along your fitness path. And that ultimately is why  I decided to get my CPT - to help people guide themselves to better fitness, whatever that means for their life.

We can find a way to fit your comfort level in these trying times. I’m fully vaccinated and boosted and can come to you, or use tech to do a remote session. We’ll make it work! If you want to find out what I can offer, contact me for more information. jasonpiercefitness@gmail.com
